This powerpoint shows how the movie Goodfellas affected culture in our society today and back then. Staring actor Ray Liotta, joined with star director Martin Sorsese, are the back bone to this master piece. The plot involves the rise and fall of Liotta in the Mafia. Through the slides, you will find out what went into making the movie, where the movie was made, how people reacted to it, and what awards it has earned.

Hi Matt! I really liked the layout of all of your slides and the pictures that you incorporated into them. I feel as if they really captured the mood and atmosphere of the movie The Goodfellas. You did a great job with the design of your slides. I also think you did a great job of simplifying your slides. I also feel you did an excellent job identifying the medium of the genre as a movie. The information on your slides definitely let the audience that you are giving a presentation on a movie. You definitely did a good job citing your sources you used for this presentation. I thought the citation page was a nice touch because it gives the audience an all-access pass to locate the sources from which you drew your information. There wasn’t too little or too much information on your slides which is definitely a good thing. However, I did notice you didn’t add any descriptions for your slides. I suggest that you add descriptions under each of your slides to elaborate on each topic of CHAT. This will provide your audience with additional information to help clarify any questions they had regarding the points on your slides. I also recommend changing the font on your distribution slide to a different color because the white font is kind of hard to read on the picture background. Overall, I think you have prepared an overall smooth and effective presentation. I especially found your presentation interesting because I love the movie The Goodfellas!

I think you did a really good job and I really liked the way you put your slides together. The pictures seemed to correlate with what you were saying and put more meaning into your words. I loved the way you incorporated the pictures into your background. However, your distribution slide was a little difficult to see as the text seems to blend into the background. I would recommend either lightening the picture or changing the font color to make it a little bit easier to see. In addition, I would also recommend bulleting some of your slides. You have very good information on your slides and by bulleting this information you can show the reader what they are looking at in a more “straight to the point” manner. The one thing that stuck with me about your presentation was the citation slide. I wouldn’t have even thought to do that! This is useful to us readers because all the citation information is conveniently in one spot and we can easily relook up any information we would like to. Lastly, I noticed you do not have any additional comments following the slides. If you were to go over this I would recommend adding further comments underneath your slides basically elaborating on what was said on the previous slide. This will further inform the reader and either clear up any outstanding questions on the information or introduce them with new information. Overall, I think you did a great job with your research and I learned a lot about Goodfellas.

Hey Matt,

For a first Cultural -Historical Activity Theory map you did a pretty good job. I loved the outline and overall designs of your slides. It seemed to go along really well with the background idea of the movie The Godfellas. On each side it seemed you had a good idea of what was asked of you, you kept each slide simple but yet incorporated the main point you were trying to make in each slide. One thing that stood out was at the end how you added the citation page and ordered them by slide versus just listing them all one by one. If I were a person who did not know what the movie The Goodfellas was about after viewing your CHAT maps I would go to see more about it. When it comes to providing constructive criticism I am stuck because you really did a good job. But if I have to point out something it would be that you could have added an overall description under each slide. That would have provided more concrete details for your individual slides. Another thing that I noticed was the background design on one of your slides. The picture in the back was in fact a nice one but with the black writing and colored background it made it difficult to read. Other than those two things good job matt! You did a good job on your first shot.

Hey Matt! I think that you did good job! I like how you did not provide too little or too much information on the slides. When you provide too much information the reader kind of skim over what you wrote and when you don’t provide enough information the audience seem to get confused. So it’s a good thing you were right in the middle. The pictures seem to go really good with the Chat map topics. I don't think I ever watched this movie before so from your slides I was able to see what it was about, who starred in it, and a lot of background information on it. I think the next time you complete a Chat map you should choose another font and color because it was a little hard to read and see it. I like how you need a slide with citations because it gives your readers a chance to see where you got your pictures and information. I had noticed that you did not include a description under the slides. I recommend next time that you add a description under the slides to elaborate on the Chat map topics. I like how each slide wasn’t the same and on some you put the picture in the background and some you put a plain background in it. Overall I think you did a really good job. You really have me interest in watching this movie!

Hey Matt! I think you did a great job on your CHAT PowerPoint presentation! I have never seen Goodfellas and I now have a better understanding of what it is all about. I think the pictures you used for your backgrounds were really cool! Having a big image really brings it to life. However, some of the slides were hard to read with the background that was behind it. Sometimes when there was white writing and a light colored background, it blurred together and was difficult to read. Your slides provided a lot of information, however, it was someone hard to follow. This is because there were not any main points. Breaking up the main points into bullet points would have made it easier to follow. Also, adding the additional information and much more underneath the slide would have beneficial. I really liked the citation slide at the end. Having the citation slide at the end makes it really easy to find all the sources you used in your PowerPoint presentation. Also, the pictures you showed in all your slides went well with what you were saying in the slides and that also makes it easier to follow. Another thing I would suggest is maybe changing the font size in your slides, some of the font was really small and hard to read. Overall, I think you made a great CHAT presentation!

I thought you did a really good job on your slides. I liked how you used pictures from the movie as backgrounds to your slides because I feel it gave people a better sense of what the movie was about. I think that your slides had the right amount of information on them to allow the reader to understand the point you were trying to get across. I felt that it was easy to follow and very clear. In addition, I liked how you added a citation slide. This allows the reader to go to the sources you used in case they wanted to read more on the making of the film. I would suggest going back and adding comments under each slide to better explain each of the seven aspects of the CHAT map to ensure that the reader can better understand how the film played into each aspect of the map. Also, I would go back to some of your slides and maybe change the font color so that it can be easier to read because some of the font is hard to read due to the backgrounds. Another suggestion would be that even though I felt your slides had a good amount of information on them, you may want to bullet point some of it in order to stress some of the main focal points that you want to get across. Overall, I would say you did a great job!

Hey Matt,

I think your PowerPoint presentation is very good! The first thing I noticed that I like quite a lot was how you went straight to the point on every slide. There wasn’t too much or too little information on any slides for the most part. If you were to add any information, it would probably have to be where to introduce Robert De Niro as an actor; you may want to give a few more main actors from the film. But other than that, the information that you present looks very convincing and teaches me a lot about The Goodfellas and I have never watched the movie before. Also, every slide does a great job of explaining the topic of that specific slide. The pictures incorporated in your presentation are also quite cool; they give a pretty good sense of some of the scenes or characters from the film itself. However, the picture on the third slide causes it a little difficult to read some of the words on that slide either changing the font color or changing the picture might help make that slide a little easily for an observer to read. Lastly, I like how you set-up your citation slide page; its very user friendly and makes it so there is no confusion for anybody trying to figure out where you got your information from. All in all, I liked your presentation a lot, The Goodfellas looks like an intriguing movie and I kind of want to watch it now after seeing your presentation.

Matt I really liked it, you did a great job. I like how your slides were filled with pictures but didn't seem cluttered, which made it more interesting. You actually made me want to watch the movie. Each slide had the appropriate information which made it easier to follow along with. Seeing your hub gave me a better idea of what we are supposed to do and actually helped me to understand the use of CHAT maps a little more. the one bad comment I have is that some of the words are a little difficult to read because of the color and size of the font, but other than that it looks great. Also instead of all the paragraphs you should separate the bullet points into main points and subpoints so that it doesn't look like it's a lot to read. Overall it was really good for your first time at this.

Hey Matt, you did a fantastic job illustrating one of the best movies of all time! It truly is a masterpiece. That being said, masterpieces are the hardest to capture the overall tone. However, I believe you hit this one home with an exceptional style. You not only captured, but sort of enhanced every theme portrayed. In my opinion, putting the major actors’ faces on the slides during critical parts in the movie helped you achieve this great success. The citation page was a great add too. I wouldn’t even think about doing that for my presentation but, now, I think I might take your idea! Nevertheless, all together, you could have added more. I mean this mostly with the description of the slides. I have personally seen this movie enough to memorize the lines. But someone who hasn’t seen it once would probably like to know a little more. In fact, someone hasn’t seen this movie once should probably go see this movie immediately afterwards because they are definitely missing out. Anyway, you did a great job overall. You just need to incorporate elaboration more and add those descriptions at the bottom. Otherwise, you did a fantastic job.

Hey Matt,

I really liked your CHAT map Good Fellas is a classic and one of my all-time favorite movies. I was really anticipating your presentation when I saw your chosen subject on the message board. Your presentation was really well researched and I could tell that you enjoyed the film yourself. The pictures that you chose matched each slide perfectly making it really easy to understand. Your presentation was put together so well .You explained the main topics of the film perfectly so people who hadn’t seen the movie could still interoperate the plot and story. As of constructive criticism maybe you could have done a list of some of the main characters and the actors that played them and their characteristics. Also how did they affect the mood of the film? I also think it would have been cool if you brought in some interesting facts about the mafia and some of the infamous characters found in the group and which characters in Good Fellas were based off of real life mobsters. Other than that I really enjoyed your projects and learning about some new facts about the film. Good Job!

The pictures for the background were good because it made the whole thing looked presentable, especially the introductory slide. Slides that had a darker background were a great idea to use because it made the pictures stood out better. Which are the introductory, Ecology and Reception slides. The darker background made the words come out clearly so you do not have to squeeze your eye to see individual words. The summary was simple and concise that made the whole thing easy to understand because that author provided exactly what we had to know about each slide. Ways to help strengthen the presentation would be using a more legible color for the words on the distribution and probably the reception slide, a little bit more information on each slide because that would help clarify some questions that we might have. Also the overall slide looked dull because it did not have any form of bright colors incorporated into it. And a bigger font for the words would have made the slide much better looking and also easy to read. Thing that the author could have done better on was to present the information it a form of a story so that people will be more interested to read it. Another thing would be using a picture for the last slide background so that it will look more presentable. Your presentation was great and I liked the summary and the pictures because they gave me background information about what the movies is about.

Hey Matt,

This was very good. From viewing and reading your chat maps it is obvious that you really took your time with this. The pictures and backgrounds on your slides were very appealing. They helped me understand what it was that you wanted to explain. It also made me want to see it now, and I probably would not have never been interested before. The citation page was also a great addition to your project. Once again, Great Job.

Hi Matt,

I really enjoyed reading you CHAT map and found it interesting. I thought you did a really good job with the overall layout and look of your PowerPoint. I learned a lot about the film itself through your knowledge on production and other aspects of the making of the film. I would also agree with you that it was a very influential piece of work then and now, with the whole obsession on Mob and gangster action. I think it would be interesting if you were to focus more on that and how culture in the American society views this topic. There is no doubt that there has always been hype or even an obsession some would say with this topic. The only other suggestion that I have is that on the third slide of your chat map maybe choose a different font or bold the text because it is kind of hard to read the points that you wrote down. Over all though I think your slides and images that you used to depict the film set a mood and give a feel of what type of erie, gory film Good Fellas is. Really good job on your chat map, it was interesting to look over and the flow of the slides worked out well as well.

Hey Matt,

I myself have never seen the movie Goodfellas so it was very interesting to see your presentation. First of all I love how simple and clean your presentation was because It got to the point without getting me confused. I love how you used pictures in your presentation as not only images but as backgrounds because it started to paint a picture in my head. You did a very nice job at incorporating all the information required for this project. I think that your comment at the end really helped me understand the movie and your presentation a lot more. The only thing I think would make this presentation would be including a little more information about what happens in the movie. I think the colors you choose seem to connect with the overall theme of drugs and violence because they are dark and gloomy and that is great. I like how you had sources under all your slides and had a slide for citation so you made sure to give credit to those who earned. In the end I think you did a fantastic job and I hope you get the grade you deserve and that’s an a.

Hi Matt,

I thought you did an excellent job on your CHAT map. I like the fact that every slide was different although some slides, such as the distribution slide, was hard to read because of the contrast of the text and background of the slide. Every slide was decorated really well and I enjoyed all of the pictures you included. I thought the amount of information on your slides was perfect. I did notice however, that you lacked descriptions underneath your slides. I think you should include more descriptions to give the reader a little more information about the movie, I was interested in what the movie was about but I would have enjoyed a little more elaboration. I thought it was very intelligent to include the citation slide, it made it appear very organized. I liked how you gave two different opinions of viewers on the reception side. Overall I think you did a great job on your CHAT map, I could tell that you really enjoyed making this PowerPoint and put time and effort into what went on the finished product

Hey Matt, Great job on your chat map overall. I really liked your pictures that you used and incorporated in your slides. It really does a great job of giving a person who has never seen or heard of the movie good fellas an idea of the story. It is one of my personal favorites because of the story line. The colors and everything do a good job making everything flow and keep it interesting. the one suggestion I will give to you is that you wrote alot in the slides, which is not exactly what most people want to do off a power point, which is read. Try to keep the text on the slides to a minimum and this was a great job

Hey Matt!

I liked reading your slides on Goodfellas, the way each slide was presented didn't make it boring to watch, I felt like the color of the background matched the theme of the pictures. But with like some people said, I also think you wrote a lot in the slides as well making it hard to absorb as material. I feel that you should break it up more rather than putting it as one big paragraph. Overall I loved the presentation.

Hey Matthew,

Yo you're so sick for choosing this movie; it is so classic. Scorsese is the biggest bro when it comes to directing. No disrespect to the gangsters in this movie, but they're really good at business. Excuse me, but the real question is, why can't they smile for the camera? First off, I enjoyed your slide format, the way that you positioned the pictures along with the text works perfectly. Secondly, I'd just like to say that the facts that you have put into your slides are very informative and fitting. Third and third mostly, I would like to ask you, how you were able to find out so much information that didn’t bore me? I do have one complaint, however, on the third slide, that white text on that picture back drop is hard to read. I would advise possibly changing the font color to BROwn. The pictures that you provided of each character depict their personality very well for the film. I think that you did a good job Matthew and I hope that you keep up the great work. Maybe someday, god willing, you will appreciate my criticism. Remember, the early bird gets the omelet.

Sincerely, Pat

I really liked your presentation. I can definitely tell this is a film you’re really interested in by the way you put it together. One part that I found that was really well done was the socialization slide. The film was made in a different time than ours and you brought up the fact that drugs and violence wasn’t a social norm for them at the time. You gave both positive and negative criticisms to the portrayl of drugs/violence in the movie and it also showed the morality of the situation. It was also cool to see the activity slide and how robert de niro had to have a different mindset before playing his character. I’m sure it is really hard to play a character thats nothing like your own personality. The reception was right on target too. Many people view the movie as unrealistic and not good to watch especially for the youth, but in the end the message is good. Crime isn’t right and always has it’s consequences. Although I’ve never seen this movie I for sure walked away from reading theses slides with a good understanding of what its about, how it’s made, and what others think of it.

Hey Matt!

Your layout is creative and definitely well organized. The way you organized your pictures into your slides was ideal for this movie and showed that you put effort. I have yet to see the movie, but is on my list of movies to watch. Now for the information on the slides, I liked how you went right to chase. You gave the information needed and was just enough to get the needed details across. At a glance it does seem that you gave to little information, but once reading through the slides you gave enough information to show the type of movie it is and what it took to make it. I liked the fact you gave details about what it took for the actors to prepare for the movie. That is something that us readers get interested in because it gives an idea how much is put into this movie or any movie for that matter. All around great job! Very creative and well put together!

**Housekeeping**

- Presentation Notes

- Use of Citation

The choice of text and images is well balanced, particularly on the Socialization, Ecology, Representation, and Activity slides. Although the slides are text-heavy, this works well for the online format because your audience has more time to read and observe rather than having to watch the clock for a presentation. The downside, though, is that it's difficult to fit enough information onto each slide to go as in-depth in each area.

The images here are well-cited. With the first image, though, be careful to link directly to the website from which the image came rather than the Google archive page.

To ensure the information you post is fully trusted, you'll want to provide in-text citations (in this case, on the slide itself) in order to show which information came from which websites. It appears that all the images have citation, but it doesn't look like the research came from the same websites as the images. You'll want to clarify this so that your readers will know where to look for more information. I do like the professionalism of your Citations slide - in a live presentation, this definitely points the way for your audience to do more research. Just be sure to provide citations not only for the images, but for the information described in your text.

**Production**

- Describing how it's produced

- Acknowledgement of creators

- Describing the research done by the authors

In the Production section, I like how you link the book and the Warner Brothers budget to the creation of the movie. To go deeper, you'll also want to talk about how Martin Scorsese came to choose *Wise Guy* to inspire his movie, or if it was Warner Brothers who made the choice. The way you describe the the scripting is very clear and builds good interest. Talking about the twelve drafts and the need to "pare down" the scenes from the book reveals good insights into the editing process for a movie.

I like how the Activity slide reveals De Niro's mental preparations and Scorsese's overbearing nature as a director - this hints at the kind of dynamic which would have pushed the filming in a certain direction. If you could tell us more about how De Niro and Scorsese interacted, that may give greater insights into how the violent nature of the film affected the way it had to be made.

The introductory text (which appears at the bottom of the slideshow) would work very well as a summary for this Hub, and might be more effective at the top of the page. You could add a text capsule above the image capsule.

**Genre Conventions**

- Identifying the genre

- Describing the genre conventions

- Showing how these conventions are used.

You bring up good material regarding how this film fits within the mafia-film genre. To strengthen this, go into more detail about how these elements compare to other films. If Scorsese had to cut some of the bloody scenes, does that mean this film is more violent than the typical gangster film? Also, why do so many people consider this as an almost definitive example of a gangster film?

**Social Activity**

- Describing social and physical distribution

- Discussing cultural reception

The slides for Representation and Socialization portray the film's social reception very well, showing how *Goodfellas* it took up themes of drug abuse and violence to become a highly recognized gangster film. I like how you've noted the film's social downside in that it glorifies violence, and the social effects of this would be interesting to explore. In particular, which scenes give the impression that power-through-violence is "cool"? Additional detail along these lines would also strengthen the slide for Reception, especially if the slide showed us which negative things people now expect from interactions with the Mafia. Also, the IMDB rating on your Distribution slide is a nice benchmark - maybe tell more about why the 8.8 out of 10 means a lot for this film.

**Audience**

- Identifying the intended audience

- Discussing how genre coventions are used to attract that audience

- Indicating audience reception.

On the Distribution slide, the audience is identifed as Italian Americans and people intrigued by the mafia. Is this the only audience to whom this film was marketed? You may want to bring up how many people have seen the film and/or purchased it. Especially when defining a film's reach along ethnic lines, you want to make sure you have good data to support this assertion, either from statistics or experts describing the reach of the film.

jmmahe2 3 months ago

Hey Matt,

Your presentation shows the true essence in genre of the infamous movie "Goodfellas". Though I'm a fan of Scarface, I do enjoy a good gangster themed movie. You did a great job on showing the director's motives. You also addressed the audience base very well. Although you could have had more information going into detail about each slide, you covered the main points of interest of the movie. You had relevant information with correct citing. There isn't any boring, unnecessary information.
